BHP Billiton H1 diamond production up 31% at Ekati

BHP Billiton reported a 31% increase in diamond production from the Ekati diamond mine in Canada during the first half year ended December 2007. For the first half year ended December 2007, diamond output at Ekati totalled 1.865 million carats. For the quarter ended December 2007, the total amount was 843,000 carats, representing a 10% decline compared to the previous year quarter. “As Canada’s Ekati transitions from open pit to underground mining, the mix of ore processed will change from time to time. In addition, although production for the half year increased significantly compared to December 2006, the production included a higher proportion of lower value carats,” BHP Billiton said in a statement.
