While premiums on producer goods remain strong, the underlying tone in the market has become somewhat milder. However, the violent swings in demand are expected to continue. Some traders are expecting a surge in demand when De Beers’ new supply contracts with fewer distributors in April. Although, traders are reporting less appetite to hold back rough in the hope of fetching higher prices. Clearly, the uncertain global market conditions are affecting sentiment. But the tight supply situation remains strongly in place. This has only been aggravated by the power supply cuts at the diamond mines in Southern Africa.
